1.1 Background of the Study
Local media has emerged as a crucial tool in fostering peaceful coexistence in communities marked by cultural, ethnic, or religious diversity. Chikun LGA in Kaduna State is a microcosm of Nigeria's diversity, characterized by a blend of ethnic and religious groups. This diversity, while enriching, has occasionally led to tensions and conflicts fueled by misunderstandings, competition for resources, and political manipulation (Bako & Ibrahim, 2024). Local media, with its proximity to the community, has the potential to serve as a platform for dialogue, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding. By disseminating balanced information, promoting cultural appreciation, and encouraging civic engagement, local media can reduce hostilities and create a conducive environment for coexistence. Research highlights the critical role of community-oriented programming and inclusive reporting in mitigating conflicts and fostering harmony (Okon & Bala, 2023). This study examines the role of local media in promoting peaceful coexistence in Chikun LGA, highlighting the strategies employed and the challenges faced.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite its potential, local media in Chikun LGA faces challenges such as politicization, lack of resources, and limited training in conflict-sensitive reporting. These constraints often result in media content that inadvertently exacerbates tensions instead of fostering unity. Additionally, there is limited empirical data on how local media actively contributes to peaceful coexistence in this region. This gap underscores the need for a systematic investigation into the practices, challenges, and impact of local media in promoting peace in Chikun LGA.
